Derive solves and graphs complex symbolic and numeric problems and plots 2D and 3D color graphs. To be globally compatible, the newest version Derive 6 uses Unicode characters. It can also send and receive math worksheets from a variety of popular calculators, including the TI–89, TI–89 Titanium, TI–92 Plus, and Voyage™ 200.
Although this program includes some instructional information it is primarily intended to solve and graph equations. It is an excellent tool for teachers to display electronic 3D images for instructional purposes. A good supplement to this program for teachers is the Geometers Sketchpad.
On the other hand, students may want to use this program as a supplement to formal instruction in the same way they might use a graphing calculator.
