The algebra section of Math Advantage from Encore has an interface similar to the one present in Math Success Deluxe, but the program is different in many ways. A lot of the things that make the interface annoying in Math Success Deluxe aren’t present in Math Advantage. The result is a much more enjoyable, user-friendly experience.
Standout Features
As with Math Success Deluxe, the lessons are taught using text and animation. No games are present, so you’re left to focus on the material at hand without anything to break up the monotony. Those who love math and all its miniscule details are going to love this program because it doesn’t divert from the teaching path whatsoever.
Math Advantage has no homework help features to speak of inside or outside of the program. However, they do offer an interesting money back guarantee, which states:
“If your grade-point-average within math does not improve from one report card to the next after using the Advantage products, return this product within 180 days of the date of purchase and we will gladly refund your money – OR – if for any reason you are not completely satisfied with this product, return this product within 30 days of the date of purchase and we will refund your money. See complete details inside the box.”
If you get the program at the beginning of your algebra class, you can use it until roughly the end of the school year, which helps students who are taking a class that lasts the entire school year a little bit, but doesn’t see them through the entire journey. Students who are taking a class that only lasts a semester are really going to get the most benefits out of this feature.
These programs cover about the same amount of topics as Math Success Deluxe, except there are exactly 10 lessons per program with Math Advantage rather than a different amount of chapters for each program in Math Success Deluxe. Each program has a streamlined, consolidated list of chapters, ensuring the amount of information the student has to take in isn’t too complex. Having a bunch of chapters you don’t need would be distracting, and detract from the program’s ultimate goal.
Encore releases a new version of this program every year complete with new features, lessons, quizzes and exercises. They are aware of what their program is lacking, so they implement new changes each year. However, nothing included with this program downloads updates. You have to wait until next year to get the new goodies.
The load times are arduous with Math Advantage. You can’t switch out of full screen mode once you start the program. Everything takes awhile to load.
Encore’s customer service is superb. We had no issues getting our questions answered.
Math Advantage is excellent at conveying what a student needs to know about a particular topic in a way they can understand. Turning it into a game would’ve enhanced their message, but what’s present in this Algebra software is well worth the retail price.
